Vasylysa Shchogoleva is a transmedial artist from Kharkiv/Ukraine, based since 8 years in Berlin. I visited her at her sunny studio in the heart of Berlin-Kreuzberg.
Her work bridges cities, disciplines, and social spaces. Her practice spans drawing, painting, illustration, and public space interventions, often inspired by urban life—like spätis, trains, and parties—and brought back into public spaces through performative acts.
In recent years, she’s come to see art not just as a personal refuge but as a powerful tool for connection, resilience, and collective dialogue.
Her work creates spaces where individual and shared experiences intersect, driven by everyday encounters and the belief that art lives in exchange and movement.
Since 2024, she has expanded her media to include writing, reading, and sound, incorporating public readings and collaborative audio works. Personal stories are transformed into visual objects that reflect broader social narratives, especially in light of the ongoing war in her homeland. For Vasylysa, art is a force that unites, opens conversations, and offers moments of clarity even in the darkest times.
